What are dental implants ?
Maintaining our dental Hygiene remains one of the most important habits to keep. However, people may need dental procedures for many other reasons rather than poor dental hygiene.Tooth decay, loss of teeth, gum disease, and genetic deformities are some of multiple reasons why people go for a dental procedure treatment.
Dental implants are one of many procedures performed by dentists to improve people’s dental health. They are titanium prosthesis that replace missing teeth for adults who completed their jawbone’s growth. A missing tooth is a huge aesthetic blow, drastically affecting self-confidence, not to mention that some people are self aware and anxious about their missing teeth, leading to social detachment and abstaining from taking any photos or videos.
Moreover, dental implants help restore jaw functionality to normal after an accident/genetic deformity. People who experience such dental problems need their teeth restored with implants to resume eating, drinking, and using their mouths normally again.
We offer a range of aesthetic/reconstructive dental procedures that can help you restore that good ol’ smile of yours. Our specialists in Turkey would be delighted to help you with all your inquiries and questions. Book your free consultation appointment now.
Different types of implants
Dental implants differ in shape, size, layout, functionality, and design. All these factors are put in consideration when the prosthodontist decides which implant is suitable for your case and jaw structure. More tests will also be made to make sure that your mouth/jaw is eligible for a dental implant or not. Some types of implants can be listed as follows:-
Endosteal :- They are the most common type of implants. A titanium root is screwed in the jawline, after making sure that the jawbone is healthy and good enough for the procedure. Once the implant fuses with the jawbones, usually in a few weeks time, the false teeth is inserted on top of the screwed fixture, marking the completion of the procedure.
Subperiosteal :- In cases where the jawbone is not strong enough to get an implant fixated in it, a subperiosteal implant is used instead. Using this method, a placeholder implant will be between under the gums but over the jawbone. However, this kind of implant is not as popular as the endosteal ones.
Zygomatic :- These implants are the rarest, due to its complexity and difficulty of application. It should be only applied if the jawbone cant support an endosteal implant. In this procedure, the implant is placed in the cheekbones rather than the jawbone.
Some other kinds of implants were improvised to be temporary, or to support other dental prosthetics and dentures. Some of these include:
Immediate load implants :- These types of implants can act as a temporary crown cap on the implanted root. You will walk out of the appointment with a replacement tooth cap that will be put in hold till the time comes for the permanent cap to be placed.
All on 4 :- It refers to replacing a whole set of upper or lower front teeth at once. However, this procedure requires a special diet to be followed and relatively longer fusion period, due to the significant number of implants screwed on the jawbone.
Mini implants :- These implants are very narrow implants used to support a lower denture. Fixating those implants is less invasive than the other methods, and it can be helpful for some jaw structures at hand.
Recovery and Care after Dental Implants
Recovery after dental implants is relatively quick compared to other cosmetic/reconstructive operations, often ranging from 1-2 days. However, if bone grafting is involved, the recovery duration can be as long as 1-2 weeks. Over the counter painkillers are prescribed to the client in case postoperative pain occurs, and a special diet is given to promote faster bone fusion of the jawbones to the implant’s structure.
Taking care of your implant aligns with the basics of dental hygiene. Brushing teeth regularly, flossing, and keeping corrosive / erosive elements out of the mouth are some of the things to be followed when taking care of implants.
