Why Does Tooth Sensitivity Occur? 

Tooth sensitivity was a very common dental disease. This problem is a more common oral health problem between the ages of 20 and 50. Tooth sensitivity occurs in the dentin layer of the tooth. The pain that occurs in the dentin layer of the tooth when sudden cold-hot, sour-sweet foods or acidic foods are consumed is defined as tooth sensitivity. It is considered an oral and dental health problem that disturbs these patients and must be treated. Many reasons cause tooth sensitivity. These reasons are as follows;

Using the wrong brush

Using the wrong toothpaste

Hard brushing of teeth

Consuming excessively sweet or acidic foods,

Consuming excessively hot and cold foods,

Causes such as clenching teeth during sleep are conditions that cause tooth sensitivity.

The important points in the prevention and treatment of tooth sensitivity can be listed as follows;

*It is necessary to go for a routine dental examination. For this reason, it supports the early diagnosis and treatment of many health problems that may occur.

*It is necessary to get support from the dentist about the type of toothpaste used, the hardness of the toothbrush, and the preferred brushing method. Soft or hard brushes will not be suitable for every patient, and it is not appropriate to recommend anti-sensitivity toothpaste or tooth whitening paste to every patient.

*It is important to pay attention to oral and dental hygiene.

*Caries should be treated to prevent the further progression of caries.

· If there is tooth grinding, treatment should be applied to the factor causing this condition.

· Depending on the gingival recession, a certain amount of tooth protectors should be applied.

· If necessary, treatments should be applied to the exposed surfaces of the teeth.

Sensitivity may be felt for 2 weeks in the teeth treated with filling treatment, this situation is expected to decrease over time. In cases that do not pass, root canal treatment may be preferred due to pulp sensitivity.

How Can I Take Control of My Sensitive Teeth? 

Although gingival sensitivity is the most common dental problem, tooth sensitivity is a preventable condition. Some situations need attention for this. These situations can be listed as follows;

*If you are aware of tooth sensitivity and the problems that cause gum sensitivity are diagnosed promptly and these problems are treated, gum sensitivity will be under control.

*Water is consumed as much as the body needs.

*It is necessary to avoid consuming acidic, sugary, extremely cold, or extremely hot foods.

· For 1-2 months of the year, desensitizing toothpaste can be preferred.

Using fluoride-containing mouthwashes can help control gum sensitivity.

Brushing teeth regularly can prevent gum sensitivity.

Using medium or soft bristle toothbrushes will prevent gingival sensitivity.

How Is It Treated? 

An important step in the treatment of tooth sensitivity is to diagnose the problem that causes tooth sensitivity. Then, the appropriate treatment method for the cause of the problem can be determined. There are different types of tooth sensitivity treatments. These methods can be listed as follows;

If there is a tooth sensitivity problem caused by caries in the teeth;

· Filling

Root canal treatment against tooth sensitivity caused by cavities causing pain

If there is tooth sensitivity caused by tooth fracture;

Dental filling

Dental veneer application

If there is a tooth sensitivity problem caused by gum recession;

Gum treatments

If you have tooth sensitivity disease caused by your complaint of clenching your teeth during sleep at night;

How Should My Daily Oral Care Be?

*Oral hygiene products should be patient-specific and these products should be cleaned after each use.

*It is necessary to change the oral care set every 6 months on average.

*During dental care, it is necessary to clean all surfaces of the teeth, inside the cheeks, palate, and tongue.

*The mouth should be rinsed with water immediately after foods such as coffee, wine, and cigarettes that will cause staining on the teeth.

*Sharp and hard objects such as toothpicks that may damage the teeth should not be used.

*Hard brushing should be avoided.

*Regular dental examination and, if necessary, treatment are part of oral and dental care.
